After I did the pencil cover concepts (done at about the size of the hardcover book cover size), I sent them to DAW. Betsy Wolheim at DAW selected number 5 and returned them to me.

I then began to lay out the perspective of the background architecture so I could design that before putting the people and creatures into the scene. I put tracing paper over the background and sketched out the characters in the scene.
